A solar water heater uses sunlight to heat water directly. A flat collector panel (or evacuated tube collector) on your roof absorbs heat from the sun and transfers it to water in a storage tank. The hot water is then available for showers, cooking, and other domestic uses.
Solar water heaters do not generate electricity — they only produce hot water. They are a separate system entirely from solar PV panels.
Solar PV Panels: How They Work
Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels convert sunlight directly into electricity using semiconductor cells. That electricity can power everything in your home or business — lights, appliances, air conditioning, water pumps, and yes, an electric water heater.
A PV system with a hybrid inverter and battery storage gives you electricity 24 hours a day, dramatically reducing or eliminating your JPS bill.
Which Delivers Better Value in Jamaica?
Solar water heaters are cheaper upfront (typically $120,000–$250,000 JMD installed) and pay back quickly because water heating is one of the highest electricity costs in a Jamaican home. If you have an electric shower or use a lot of hot water, a solar water heater alone can cut your JPS bill by 20–30%.
Solar PV panels cost more but deliver far greater total savings. A full PV system with battery backup can reduce your JPS bill by 70–90% — covering everything, not just hot water.
