What Happens to Your Solar System During a Hurricane?

It is a question every Jamaican solar customer eventually asks: what happens to my system if a hurricane hits? It is a legitimate concern in a country that sits squarely in the Caribbean hurricane belt. Here is an honest answer.

How Are Solar Panels Mounted?

Solar panels installed by Ecopower Jamaica are mounted on aluminium rails using heavy-duty clamps and stainless steel fixings. The mounting systems we use are rated for significant wind loads and are designed to stay on your roof in severe weather conditions.

The angle at which panels are typically mounted in Jamaica (to optimise sun exposure) also helps deflect wind rather than catch it, unlike a flat surface.

What Wind Speeds Can Panels Handle?

Quality solar panels and mounting systems are generally tested and rated for wind speeds of 130–150 km/h (Category 1–2 hurricane range). Panels and racking are designed to flex slightly rather than snap under wind load, which reduces the chance of catastrophic failure.

That said, no solar installation can guarantee survival of a direct Category 4 or 5 hurricane. Extreme wind events can damage any structure.

Should I Do Anything Before a Hurricane?

For most storms, no special preparation is needed beyond your normal hurricane preparations. For a major predicted hurricane:

  • Your inverter and battery are typically installed inside or in a protected location — they should be fine
  • Panels are fixed to the roof and should not be removed
  • Ensure your electrical disconnect is accessible so you can shut down the system if needed
  • Check your system monitoring app to confirm everything is operating normally before the storm

What If a Panel Is Damaged?

Solar panels are covered by manufacturer warranty against defects but not typically against hurricane damage. Homeowners insurance in Jamaica can often be extended to cover solar equipment — we recommend speaking to your insurance provider about adding your system to your policy.

Ecopower Jamaica can assess and repair storm-damaged systems. We also service systems installed by other companies.

The Silver Lining: Power After the Storm

One of the most valuable aspects of having a solar and battery system in Jamaica is what it delivers after a hurricane. When JPS outages can last days or weeks following a major storm, a solar system with battery backup allows you to keep lights on, food cold, phones charged, and critical equipment running — while your neighbours rely on expensive generators or go without.
